Reese: I’ve had eczema for as long as I can remember. When I was a baby it was pretty focused on my scalp, knees, and elbows. When I was in grade school and high school, it seemed to gravitate to the inside of my elbows, knees, and even my feet. Sometimes I would even get flares on my neck. I remember I would always wear a scarf long pants and long sleeves to keep people from seeing it. I was always overdressed, even in the summer months. I think it probably made it worse but the looks and stares I received when my skin was out in the open was too much for me to take. Now that I’m in my late twenties, I have the rashes on my feet, toes, hands, wrists, and upper arms. I can’t seem to get a break. I really need some kind of relief here as it makes my daily life just miserable.
Doctor: I understand. Not that it helps but what you are telling me about the changes in locations, is actually pretty typical of AD. It tends to change over time as a person ages. The fact that you have had this since such a young age also makes it more likely for you to have recurrent and persistent AD.
Reese: Well that doesn’t make me feel any better. I’ve dealt with this so long that I’ve really just had enough. I want to get back to living my life and not worrying so much about these flare ups. I’ve tried the bleach baths and wet wraps and the topical creams. I used to get phototherapy years ago, but I really don’t remember if it helped me at all. I’m ready for a change and I’m looking to you for help to get this under control. Is this something you can help me with?
Doctor: I understand your frustration and I want you to know that we can try different therapies to see what would work best for you. There are some newer therapies out that may help improve and clear up your skin. You may even be able to wear short sleeve shirts again.
Reese: Wow! What a thought! That would be great. Can you tell me a little more about how these drugs work and what might be a good option for me?
Doctor: Of course. Let’s take a few minutes and see which may be the best fit for you.
